The study is concerned about the problems in listening teaching and the solutions. According to English course standards, the language skills include listening, speaking, reading and writing, which are all important for people to commuciate with each other. The four skills are important ways to know the world. Listening and reading are receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills .To acheive teaching purpose, listening teaching must be paid enough attention to. However, listening teaching has been the weakness in the English teaching. Many problems in it need solving. Teachers have not effective methods of listening teaching. As a result, students, who are not satisfied with listening class, lose interest in listening class gradually. Students'listening ability cannot be improved. So this study is important and necessary for teachers to carry out.As to the study, first of all, questionnaires for teachers and students are used to find out problems in listening teaching. Teachers'teaching methods and students'attitudes to listening class are investigated. According to the investigation, the problems are found out that teachers lack effective teaching methods and students get tired of listening class. In the literature review, listening theories and present research about listening activities are referred to. The author decides to use five-stage listening method in listening class to do the study. Five-stage method is used in experimental class while compared class uses traditional methods. Different listening activities are chosen in experimental class .At last, questionnaires, interviews, tests are used to collect data and then the author analyzes the data collected from both classes.After analyzing the results of experiment, it can be shown that both students'interest and listening ability are better in experimental class than in compared class by using five-stage listening method. It can be concluded that five–stage method benefits listening teaching.
