Self-regulated learning has the important function of inspiring learners in their learning, helping learners with their use of learning strategies and metacognition. Lots of research and practice in self-regulated learning has been done overseas and they have proved fruitful. This paper presents the study of the relationship between self-regulated learning and English reading achievement to explore new teaching approaches in Chinese secondary schools. The study involves an experimental group undergoing a nearly five-month instruction integrated with reading strategy instructions, and a comparison group exposed to the language instructions only as usual. Data analysis based on the pre- and post-proficiency tests, questionnaires, learner's profiles, monitoring charts and interviews reveal the following findings.1. There are significant correlations between students'self-regulated learning abilities and reading achievements. Self-regulated training will improve the students'reading performance, whereas the comparison group remains unaffected in these aspects.2. Training in SRL can enhance students'sense of responsibility for their learning, deepen their understanding of the reading process, and better psychological adaptation to language learning in the experimental group, whereas the comparison group remains unaffected in these aspects.3.Grasping and refining the capability to self-regulate students'learning can contribute to students'higher motivation , positive attitudes and high self-efficacy towards learning, which in turn propels students'development as well as school performance. In summary, with effective instruction and training of a SRL cyclic model, awareness of strategy use can be reinforced, leading to students'higher motivation, positive attitudes and high self-efficacy towards learning and finally progress in language proficiency. Furthermore, implications for SRL reading in senior middle school classrooms have been discussed, and more attention is called for further studies in the domain of the four skills of a language learning—speaking, listening, reading and writing.
