By exploring Task-based Learning (TBL) and Intercultural Communication Theory, this thesis aims at illustrating the relations between them and attempts to help reveal the relevance of Intercultural Communication Theory to TBL in the middle school English teaching practices, and proposes a conscious application of Intercultural Communication Theory to TBL, which, the thesis argues that, is the key to the success of a new round of English teaching reform in China as well as the improvement of TBL.According to New Basic English Course Standard, TBL is the only required method. This standard calls for student-centered teaching rationale. The task should be natural to the linguistic environment, and helpful to the students'learning, co-operating and constructing meaning in their study. TBL's task and aim should be reconsidered from cross-cultural perspective so that the quality of middle school English teaching can be further improved. This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter one illustrates the relations between TBL and Intercultural Communication Theory from the conception and cross-cultural perspective. Language expresses cultural reality; Language embodies cultural reality; Language symbolizes cultural reality. So cultural awareness helps to facilitate foreign languages learning and cultivate the intercultural communicative competence. Chapter two discusses TBL in cross-cultural perspective and build up a analytical framework for the argumentation of the thesis. Chapter three is a case study, from which data are collected and analyzed, and findings are presented. In the last chapter, a conclusion is drawn.
