With the unceasing reforms and booming economics of China, a harmonious nation is arising.Although China is relatively late in participating in the contemporary world-wide educational reforms, its Higher Education Self- Taught Exam which best embodies the concept of Lifelong Education, however, promotes the idea of Lifelong Education in China--the world's biggest country, into practice. After making an assessment of China's Higher Education Self-Taught Exam which manifests China's unique characteristics, it is not difficult to conclude that it has astonishing similarities with the idea of Lifelong Education as well as its tendencyFirst, openness of Self- Taught Exam. " Rules for Higher Education Self- Taught Exam " promulgated in 1988 by The State Council stipulate that"Citizens of People's Republic of China, regardless of sex, age, nationality and race has access to take part in self-taught examinations". Without limitation of age means that Chinese citizens may voluntarily attend the state-sponsored self-taught examinations which is free from time and age, as a result, it fully manifests the openness and life-long quality .Secondly, high personalization and flexibility. "Rules" stipulate that"Higher Education Self- Taught Exam is a combination of self-study, social assistance and national exams"; It is up to the attendants whether participating in self- taught exam or training program, combining the three essential factors together. The subject, curriculum and time to take is totally determined by the attendants .Thirdly, lower educational costs and expenses, which guarantees more Self-Taught Learners may have access to take an examination. The fees for Self-Taught Exam which aims at pursuing equal education opportunity mainly include teaching materials and register handling charge as well, which, however is not to bring about a rather big financial burden to the attendants of different professions and social status.The author has used several methods involving document, statistics, observation and logics to center on the Self-Taught exam and lifelong education. This article is divided into five parts.The first part is to state the questions. It states that Self-Taught Exam has taken effect in elaborating the Lifelong Education System and constructing the Learning society. Through studies, we can learn how to develop the Lifelong Education and promote the development of Self- Taught Exam in our country. The second part is the basis and methods the research is based on. This part provides the corresponding policy basis for this research and point out some important research techniques including document, statistics, observation and logics.The third part is about the contemporary development and value of China's Self-Taught Exam. It summarizes the development of the Higher Education Self- Taught Exam, illustrating the value of the reforms and development of higher education.The fourth part is to study the elaboration of the Lifelong Education System in our country. It states the background of the Lifelong Education and the Lifelong Learning, the concept of Lifelong Education, and proposes the elaboration of Lifelong Education System. The fifth part further examines the Self- Taught Exam and the Lifelong Education according to the above analysis and research. It interprets why we choose the Self-Taught Exam as one kind of pattern in the elaboration of Lifelong Education System, analyzing the function of the Self-Taught Exam in constructing the Lifelong Learning System to finally perfect the system of Self-Taught Exam for the students according to the requirements of Lifelong Education and the Lifelong Learning System.
