| Academic research as a significant function of modern colleges and universities has played an important role in the history of civilization, and will still play the same role in the setting up of the national system of innovation, a mission right undertaken by the country aiming to promote independent productivity. And since college academic research is the direct cause of innovation, its performance decides the efficacy of the system in question. With sufficient data in hand, the present article, by means of documentation, historical analysis and interview, clarifies the intension of the concept of college academic research and explores the history of college academic research as against that of human beings, finding that the history of college academic research in the western countries has undergone roughly four stages: preparatory, rudimentary, established and extending stages, then returns to the history of college academic research in China that has undergone vicissitudes over a century lasting from the establishment of the modern college to now, and, finally, with the historical reference in mind, analyses the opportunities and challenges confronting college academic research in China, and ends with some proposals as to the future of college academic research. |
