Now, the aim of education is to cultivate quality - oriented personnel. As far as English teaching is concerned the goal is to develop the students' creative communicative competence, the ability to study and to cooperate. Among these competences, the ability to speak is extremely vital. Therefore, oral English test is of great importance in the English test in senior high schools. However, we don't attach enough importance to the oral test in English teaching and testing. At present, only a few developed cities and provinces, such as Shanghai, Guangdong Province, are at the stage of trial tests for the oral English for senior high schools. In the majority areas, there is no oral test at all.On the basis of the reality of English teaching in senior high schools, with the overall literature review of the research at home and abroad, the thesis tries to explore an oral testing plan, which is effective, feasible and suitable for different kinds of senior high schools, with the intention to solve the problem of lacking the oral test in senior high schools and advocate the practice of effective oral tests in senior high schools. And this will enable the oral testing design to meet the needs and requirements of teaching practice, so as to guide our language teaching in the direction of cultivating and developing learners' ability to use the language.Under the guidance of the theory of linguistic testing and the newly issued English Curriculum Standard, this thesis aims to explore the oral English test in senior high schools in the form of design, the testing forms, the scoring criteria and the duties of the examiners, etc. Different research methods are adopted in the thesis, including questionnaire and statistical analysis. Through the testing experiment and the analysis of the results, conclusions have been drawn. The thesis has also pointed out the limitations of the experiment and the problems to be investigated and resolved.This thesis is composed of six parts. Part one is an introduction. In part two, the necessity of oral English tests in senior high schools is discussed. Part three gives a historical review of oral testing. Besides, this part also gives a brief introduction to some requirements of the oral testing stated in the newly issued English Curriculum Standard. Part four deals with the design of the oral test in senior high schools. In part five, an experiment is carried out and the analysis of the results is made. Part six serves as the conclusion of the thesis.
