At present, the Chinese language proficiency of middle school students has been showing a trend of decline and their Chinese learning environment is not optimistic. This has aroused a widespread concern and deep worry among many people of insight. This paper is based on this exact situation and we have analyzed from both the internal and external aspects the advantages and disadvantages of the temporary Chinese learning environment for middle school students. Also, some practical solutions are proposed for the problems we are facing. In this paper, the unification of theory, practicality and prospectivity is stressed and we try to take a connective and all-side view to observe, analyze and deal with problems. As far as we are concerned, the Chinese learning environment for middle school students today has mainly shown the following features: 1. less time is spent and less importance is laid on Chinese learning while English learning is promoted and there has appeared an "English fever" among the students. 2. The approaching of a "picture reading era" has brought a great threat to text reading as well as limits the students' thinking and imagination. 3. Net-work language, intermingled with both good and bad, has already shown its great impact on students' Chinese learning and needs pressingly to be standardized. 4. Exam-oriented education has resulted in a utilitarian attitude and low interest in Chinese learning. 5. The effectiveness of each class period is not high enough to satisfy each student's all-round development. This is the very environment in which our middle school students learn their mother tongue. To improve the students' Chinese language proficiency, we must have a clear recognition of the temporary situation which calls for our comprehensive and objective study. This is never too big a deal because a nation's culture and tradition is passed down and developed through the learning of her own language. The Chinese learning of our middle school students is closely connected with the future development of our country. In this respect, the topic in this paper has its profound social significance. How to create a proper and encouraging environment for Chinese learning among middle school students? We believe that this is a large project which calls for the efforts and cooperation of all sectors of society. The government should first build up the awareness of language safety and implement a language safety strategy; second, stick to "Chinese in privilege and English just enough" in language education; third, speed up the reform of the examination system to provide more freedom and flexibility for the students in Chinese learning. Parents should take an active role in the curriculum reform and this will help make full use of family as one of the educational resources. Middle schools and Chinese teachers should take the responsibility and work together to create a proper environment for Chinese learning. The first and the most important step is to arouse the students' interest in reading, then to guide them to make friends with books and enjoy themselves in reading and fall in love with Chinese. Besides, teachers are supposed to teach the students to read in a critical way and to view the temporary literary phenomena dialectically and lead them to choose and read good books. At the same time, teachers should teach the students to view net-work language from a rational standpoint and improve their aesthetic faculty of language. The efforts to open up new Chinese course resources and to create an open environment for Chinese learning are also encouraged. In summary, the government, parents, schools and teachers should all work together and take all efforts to create a good environment for our middle school students' mother tongue learning. This is a hard work, but a glorious work as well.
