This dissertation pays attention to bring up person with high qualities in research universities; what's more, the idea of learning freedom is introduced into the undergraduate education in research universities.After looking back and hackling the historical theories about learning freedom, significant values of learning freedom in research universities are argued in detail according to the essential characters of research universities and the cultivating goals of undergraduate students. Some points are definitely put forward as follows: learning freedom corresponds to the essential characters of research universities education; learning freedom is an indispensable aspect of the teaching freedom in research universities. Only by emphasizing learning freedom, the academic prosperity of research universities can be promoted; wanting to cultivate person with innovative abilities, unique personalities and strong responsibilities, learning freedom can not be neglected.Concretely, the abroad typical models of undergraduate education which pay attention to learning freedom in research universities(take Germany, England and America for example, and attach most importance to America ) are analyzed for reference. Subsequently, based on interview the existent problems of undergraduate education in research universities are summarized and analyzed. It is indicated that college students in China do not possess enough learning freedom, and many of them are not confident of their abilities to learn independently. Finally, aiming at the existent problems in Chinese university, under the learning freedom ideas the basic thinking of the undergraduate education in our research universities are put forward. Comparing with ordinary universities and colleges, research universities should take inquiry learning as trait, and explore a road of carrying out the learning freedom ideas according to students'search consciousness, innovation ability and criticism spirit. At the same time, for improving undergraduates'abilities and strengthening their faiths of learning freedom, systemic institution of learning counseling should be set up as soon as possible.
