The teacher-centered teaching model that pays too much attention to impart the knowledge from textbooks should be altered in class teaching and Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)should be adopted as far as possible,according to the newly-published New National Curriculum.Advocating the TBLT means fulfilling the cultivation of the ability to apply languages comprehensively in the course of teaching.The Studying model of experiencing,practicing,participating,communicating and cooperating should be altered in order to achieve the goal of tasks and experience the real taste of success.Besides,it puts a lot of emphasis on students' ability to take advantage of English to do something and suggests teachers' adopting the TBLT as far as possible instead of teaching language knowledge alone so that students are not only able to pick up the language also communicate by means of languages while completing tasks In the past 20 years and over,many experts in applied linguistics not only do research into TBLT in theory but also explore it in practice.A lot of volumes of literatures have come into being due to their contribution to this field of linguistics.But in the present English teaching circles,many Chinese English teachers do not know much about it for lack of training.They are still employing the traditional way of teaching in reading classes,which does not benefit the students and is not in agreement with the New National Criterion for English Course.Therefore,the author argues that it is of great importance to elaborate on task-based approach to make sure that more English teachers know about it and integrate it into their English teaching.The present study,taking Piaget's Social Constructivist Theory,Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Affective Filter Hypothesis as its theoretical bases,by means of empirical study,researched TBLT to test whether the method can effectively improve learners' reading performance.The paper first probes into the relevant theory,including the theory bases,tasks and principles of TasksBased Language Teaching and Willis' teaching model is presented in detail.Then this thesis explores the application of Task-Based Language Teaching,with designing appropriate and efficient reading tasks as the core.Based on the models of reading process and the principles of task design,the thesis offers designing examples in the reading classroom.To bear testimony to the hypothesis that Task-Based Language Teaching is more effective than the traditional.teaching method in improving students' reading performance,the current thesis seeks to get the approval by means of carrying out a Task-Based Language Teaching reading experiment in two parallel classes of Senior 2 from Zhonghualu Middle School.The results of the experiment show that the experimental class that adopts TBLT has made more remarkable progress than the control class adopting the traditional teaching method.That indicates Task-Based Language Teaching can be used in the reading classroom effectively and that students' reading level can be increased by designing different and proper tasks.This thesis consists of altogether seven parts altogether.Part One is an introduction focusing on the background,the significance and the purpose of the present study.Part two provides a brief overview of a theoretical review on the nature of reading process,a brief review of 3 traditional methods of teaching in reading and research on TBLT in china and abroad.Part three introduces Constructivism,Krashen's "Input and Interactionist Hypothesis" and The affective filter hypothesis,which construct a theoretical frame for the study.Part four provides the application of TBLT to teaching reading in senior middle school,mainly including fundamental principles,types of the reading task design and finally introducing the design of TBLT models in senior high school according to Willis'task-implementing model in teaching.Part five elaborates the experiment itself,mainly including the hypothesis of the present study,the procedures of the experiments and questionnaires.Part six is data collection and analyses.The result of the experiment shows that TBLT is more effective than traditional method in senior middle school English reading.Part seven draws a conclusion to the study.Implications as well as limitations are discussed here.
