The independent college is a newly appeared running mode adopted in the transition of higher education system in China. Its appearance and development is both an exploration and an innovation in China's higher education running system as well as running model. Compared with the mode in public university, private university and higher vocational technology education, the independent college runs with remarkable characteristics due to the fact that it combines the advantage of public university with that of private one. Rapid development and popularization in recent years has gradually made the independent college an important part of current higher education in China. It makes due contribution to higher education in such aspects as alleviating fund shortage, expanding education scale, speeding up the course of education popularization and promoting innovation of educational system, and further will has a far-reaching impact on the education system reform.While enjoying rapid development, the independent college is bothered by many existing problems and difficulties ahead. Starting from the analysis of state-owned subordinate college which is predecessor of the independent college, the paper traces back its history of emergence, development and transition to the independent college. Meanwhile based on a comparative study among the independent colleges, the state-owned subordinate colleges and the private universities, the paper reveals deeply basic features of this unique school running mode adopted by the independent colleges, and analyzes from macro, medium and micro scopes the problems and their causes about the independent college education. Using these theories of corporate governance, public governance and the third sector, the paper finally tries establishing from the above mentioned scopes a stakeholders co-governance mode aiming at the realization of sound, harmonious and sustainable development in the independent colleges.
