The reform of universities calls for education innovation. And the key of innovation lies in the implementation of caliber education, which requires a change of both methodology and means: i.e. from imparting knowledge to integrating imparting knowledge , skill and developing abilities. Yet it is beyond the traditional education philosophy and methods. Therefore an experimental research guided by cooperative learning theory was conducted in swimming teaching for the PE majors with the purpose of solving the existing problems and thus renew teaching philosophy for perfecting the whole teaching process of swimming.Cooperative learning theory is an creative and effective theory based on modern psychology, sociology of education, cognitive psychology and science of modern education technology. With the objective of raising the scores of majority students' and shaping good mentality and social skills through improving the social psychological environment within a class. The theory focuses on studying the person-to-personal relationship in class and follows the planned design, motivated by the cooperation between teacher and students, students-students, teacher-to teacher. Group activities was taken as the basic form of teaching and group score will be taken for assessment against standard reference data. So far, no complete cooperative learning theory for swimming teaching has been created both at home and abroad in spite of the various practices of cooperative learning .And yet s systematic research of the application of cooperative learning theory in swimming teaching are relatively few.Guided by dialectical materialism phylosophy , cognitive psychology and modern psychology as well as educational sociology, an experimental research was conducted by the writer with the approaches of literature review, expert questionnaire , investigation, and experiments. The results were analyzed, the diversity and profundity of the basis of cooperative learning theory were revealed with the finding that cooperative learning plays a very positive role in swimming teaching for students of PE majors.
