As a tool of quality management, during the last two decades, benchmarking has expanded rapidly in the western higher education. As a self-evaluation or exterior evaluation tool, it is regarded more and more important. Among different kinds of benchmarking modes abroad, the DETYA mode is very typical and useful for reference.The topic of this thesis is "Research on and learning from Benchmarking in higher education of Australia", and the research methods of this thesis include literature analyzing and case study. Based on the review of the historical development of benchmarking in higher education, this thesis illustrates the definitions, types, methods, procedures of benchmarking. Then based on the particular introduction of the general development of Australia higher education and the feature of their quality assurance framework, this thesis analyses in detail the benchmarking activities and technologies, then sum-up the characteristics and the reasons why they can success. At last, this thesis demonstrates that this method is useful for us, and selects stuff field of Northwest University as the subject, Nanjing University as the partner, to apply the DETYA mode in order to illuminate the specific operating procedures for higher education to use the tool of benchmarking .Finally it makes conclusions for the above practice and looks into the future for the application of benchmarking into institutions of higher education in China.
