The university combination is a significant maneuver to adjust the layout and to reform higher education system insurance of further development in 1990s in China; besides, it is of higher research education. Subject is the basic position of university's personnel training, scientific research, social services and university activities and organizational management foundation. Subjects reflect the knowledge possession of University, subjects' level reflects the quantity of university, the quality and quantity reflects university' own characteristics and the level basically. University is as the place of spreading, developing, and application of knowledge, and all activities are carried out on the basic of subject. Therefore, all resources' integration of quality must be matching with the adjustment of subject to the combined colleges and universities both human resources, financial resources, other tangible and intangible resources. The subject is the ultimate goal of combined colleges and universities.The focus of this thesis is how to construct the disciplines in the combining higher education institutions. Based on the data collected by retrieving a lot of documents and by investigating several representative universities in China on the spot, the author pointed out the theoretical and practical problems in the discipline construction, proposed some rational ideas for it, and finally ,the author put forward some recommendations and measures. The paper makes a case study of South West University's practice in discipline integration.The present thesis is composed of the following four parts:Part 1 defines some related concepts such as the discipline, the discipline of university, the major and the integration of combined colleges and universities.Part 2 depicts the background of combined colleges and universities. The discipline's mutual penetration and integration can find its theoretical ground from the arrival of the new technological revolution, the development of the times, college personnel training, scientific research for the improvement of cross-discipline integration and provide a theoretical basis. At the same time, analysis the subjects status quo of South Western UniversityPart 3 points out the discipline integration exerts an active impact on South West University's progress, leading to the birth of cross-linked disciplines and thus promoting the fast development of research and relevant disciplines. Meanwhile, some problems deserve to be resolved, so this chapter analysis the common and Characteristics problems of the South West University's subjects integration.Part 4 proposes the rationalization measures of disciplines integration according to the found problems. And point out the harmony of disciplinary culture as well as originality is the basic of discipline integration; the key of disciplinary combination lies in the originality of discipline arrangement structure; and the boosters is scientific positioning campus functions and optimize resource allocation.
