Research On Competitive Ability Of University Discipline

Discipline is the basic academic unit of university and the basic carrier of resource allocation such as human, money and material. Discipline level decides the position of the university in the higher education system, the competitive ability of university depends on the competitive ability of discipline. Every world-recognized first-class university has a number of first-class disciplines. Contemporary higher education is developing in competition, several countries are committed to improving the global competitiveness of their higher education by creating a number of first-class universities, every university also seek its own survival and development space in the competitive environment. As the core content of the competitive ability of university, the competitive ability of discipline is particularly important, which implies the necessity of this study.This paper probes competitive ability of discipline from three dimensions.The first dimension is discipline arrangement competitiveness, discipline arrangement supports the university’s past, present and future, determines the function and characteristics of the university, constituting the main content of the competitive ability of discipline. The second deimension is discipline factor competitiveness, discipline factor reflects the ability of university having, configuring and using resources, reflects the running level of university, is the key link of the competitive ability of discipline itself. The third deimension is discipline culture competitiveness, discipline culture accumulates on the discipline, leading the development of academic discipline with symbol system, values and spiritual pursuit and so on, is the natural connotation of the competitive ability of discipline.Arounding explanation of the three dimensions above,this paper makes an empirical analysis based on statistical analysis and questionnaire survey which taking "985 project" universities as the research object.According to the width of university discipline,divding the sample universityies into four types-single discipline university, arts and sciences multiversity,science and engineering multiversity, comprehensive university, laies the foundation for the similar comparison of the discipline factor competitiveness. Based on the "recessive factor-dominant factor "double understanding about discipline factor, selecting some representative indicators to constructe statistical analysis system, summarizing the main factor that affecting the discipline factor competitiveness, analyzing recessive factor competitiveness, dominant factor competitiveness and comprehensive competitiveness of discipline factors. Through the questionnaire survey, analyzing the differences between the concept and practice of university discipline cultural construction, then has an overall grasp to the university discipline culture construction.On the whole, there remain some errors both in cognition and practice about the competitive ability of discipline. Large and all-inclusive development pattern weakened discipline arrangement competitiveness, excessive dependence on the evaluation hurt the competitiveness of the discipline factor, and the formalism in the construction of discipline culture hollowed discipline culture competitiveness. Based on ecological niche of university, shaping the irreplaceable competitive advantage, seeking a balance between discipline addition and subtraction is the key of firming discipline arrangement competitiveness. Encouraging pluralistic evaluation, weakening official evaluation, reducing quantitative indicators, guiding university to take the road of connotation development are fundamental to promote the discipline factor competitiveness. Translating ideas into action, setting up conscious attention of discipline culture, creating a good cultural atmosphere of university discipline is the core of breding discipline culture competitiveness.
