Since 1980s, the rapid developing private universities have become an important force in China's higher education system. After the promulgation and implementation of"Law of the People's Republic of China on Promotion of Privately-run Schools", private universities have got broader space for development, which is also of great significance for the development of higher education in China. The positioning of colleges and universities is a hot issue and difficult part for the present research on Chinese higher education. The correct positioning of colleges and universities is directly related to their healthy, rapid, stable and sustainable development. If a university wants to occupy a favorable position in fierce competition, it is necessary to correctly assess itself, balance the advantage and disadvantage, choose a proper position, and highlight its own characteristics, so as to better adapt to the demand for talented people by economic development and social advancement. The development of private universities is at a crucial period. Only rational planning of their strategic thinking and the orientation of development can lead to golden opportunities and new leap-forward development. The positioning of private college concerns not only the future direction of private higher education, but also sustainable development of higher education of China. Therefore, as an important force to the popularization of higher education in China, the problem of its positioning should not be ignored. This thesis explores the current situation of the positioning of private universities at two levels: the macro one of government and the micro one of private colleges and universities themselves. Three private universities, Xi'an Institute of Foreign Affairs, Beijing Geely University, University of Nottingham in Ningbo, are selected as objects of case studies. Based on the analysis of internal factors and external factors which influence private colleges'positioning, the thesis suggests an idea of the realization of rational positioning.
