Into the 21st century,science and technology develop with each passing day,while competition in comprehensive national strength will be performance for the technology and talent competition.With people's awareness that higher education has been playing a more direct and important role on the economic and social development,higher education and regional economic development has become a global issue.In the era of knowledge:economy,higher education and socio-economic development are becoming closer and closer.From the margins of society toward the center of society,higher education has become the engine of the development of economy,society,science and technology.At present,China is faced with the dual mandate——accelerated industrialization and meet the challenges of a knowledge-based economy.Meanwhile,after the successful accession to the WTO, China becomes more and more active and in-depth in the participation in international economic and affairs.How to complete the three-step development strategy and achieve the great rejuvenation of the ages in the new century? It requires our full understanding of the status and role of higher education in the regional economy. This article,from the economics point of view,uses the method of combination of qualitative and quantitative and combination of theoretical research and empirical to analyze the status and role of higher education in regional economic in order to achieve their "complementary" and,'win-win" strategic objectives.With the development of economy and the establishment of the knowledge-based economy's dominant position,the integrating process of higher education and economic and social development accelerates,and higher education and regional economy are becoming closer and closer,between which there are the dialectical relationship of mutually promoting and developing together.Higher education promotes the growth of regional economy,with the cultivation of talents,the innovation of knowledge and technology and so on.The cognition of higher education's status and role in regional economic is very useful in the reform of deepening China's higher education field,the enhancement of China's regional economic competitiveness,the achievement of the sustainable development of regional economy,and the promoting of the national economy's balanced and healthy development.Through this study,it will be helpful not only for people to understand more clearly the status and role of higher education in Shandong Province in the regional economic,so that higher education in Shandong Province will adjust to and promote the regional economic development,but also for higher education in Shandong Province itself to its own development of popularity and characteristics,and it has theoretical and practical significance for the development of higher education in Shandong Province.
