In the 21th century, at the background of economic globalization, knowledge is playing a more and more important role in all the fields. Peace and development had been the main theme in the new age. Cooperation has become a very important quality for people to exist and develop in the modern world. The cooperative and creative spirits have become the era spirits in the 21th century and an important part in one's outlook on life and world. So there is a new demand of cultivation of the spirits of team cooperation as well as creativity for teenagers. Education has to fulfill the global task for all the students in the world.However, the traditional instruction system emphasizes rather competition and individualism than cooperation, which not only interferes study itself, but also hampers perfect development of students' personality and mental health. National Standards of English Course (Experimental Edition) puts more emphasis on the importance of co-operative learning. It's profile explicitly reveals that the reform of the English course advocates experience, practice, participation, and communicative learning style and task-oriented approach based on learners' interests, life experience and cognitive level, aiming at developing learners' comprehensive abilities. Cooperative learning has been adopted widely all over the world and has been regarded as the most effective teaching model and strategy with which students' creativity, consciousness of collectivism and cooperation will be promoted. Based on the theoretical review at home and abroad and the study of New National Standard for English Curriculum, the author thinks that the application of this teaching approach can change the traditional ways of English teaching, which pays too much attention to the explanation of grammar and vocabulary, and develop students' competence of language use. The method, based on students' learning interest, life experience and their cognitive levels, creates more opportunities of practice, involvement, cooperation and communication for students, develops their positive affection, facilitates their active thinking and practice, and improves their cross-cultural awareness and their autonomous learning.This thesis aims at probing into the feasibility of applying cooperative learning in groups to the junior English class. By the means of theory analysis and experiment, it first describes the present situation of English class teaching and reviews the concepts,significance,background and strategy of cooperative learning. Then it analyses how to carrying out the teaching method in the junior English class. The relative experiment is carried out to prove that cooperative learning is an effective teaching method in English classroom teaching in junior schools on some students of Grade Two in Wuhan No 6 junior school. The results show that the students' grade has a significant improvement after being tested on. So we can get a conclusion that it is feasible to carry out the strategy of cooperative learning in practice. However, the research still needs to be perfected.
