Textbooks are the carrier of curriculum and the basis of teaching and learning. Therefore the qualities of textbooks are closely related to the results of teaching. More and more countries have attached much importance to the research of textbooks since 1980s. From the point of view of education and psychology, this thesis makes a brief research on the English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools since the founding the PRC. It is aimed at throwing light on the historical changes of the English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools in the last 50 years and the backgrounds of the publication of textbooks at each phase, and analyzing the typical textbooks of each phase. Based on this, the thesis makes a conclusion of the reforms of English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools, and we hope it will provide the development of English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools with theoretical support and reference in the new century.The thesis is divided into four parts:The first part Guidance. A Introduction of the development of the English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools and the English language education at present.All shows the theory significance and real value of the research of the English textbooks. At last , discriminates the several relevant concepts.The second part The Historical Development of the English Textbooks Used in the Chinese Junior Middle Schools since the Foundation of the PRC, briefly makes a vertical analysis of English textbooks used in the Chinese junior middle schools and the English language education before the foundation of the PRC, divides the development into five phases, and by analyzing the typical textbooks of each phase, makes a tentative study on the condition of development of the English textbooks at each phase.The third part Mainly makes a horizontal analysis of English textbooks. From the point of view of guiding ideas, structural systems, language knowledge, and methods of presentation, this part focuses on the tendency of the changes of the English textbooks.The fourth part Gives six suggestions on the improvement of the English textbooks: 1. to establish a new outlook on the English teaching guided by the new curriculum; 2.to reform the textbooks constantly in accordance with the development of the modern society; 3. to quality-orientfy and humanize the beliefs of the editing of textbooks; 4. to attach importance to the introduction of outstanding foreign textbooks; carry forward the good traditions of domestic textbooks; 5. to diversify the editing of textbooks; 6. to improve the systems of textbook editing and checking so as to guarantee the qualities of the textbooks.
