Nowadays, the research of American educational historiography in several domestic famous universities can be in the ascendant. However in general, domestic research of American educational historiography is still underway and in need of improvement. Monroe is an important character in the history of American educational historiography, and his great contribution had constructed a bridge between early American educational historiography and traditional one. Factually Monroe had ever been deeply influenced by European traditional historiography, and also inherited the style of historiography of early American educational historiography researchers. Then because of the impact of progress historiography, he transferred to the research of traditional American educational historiography, which was much more characteristic, and made outstanding contributions to this field. Moreover, Monroe had been paying attention to the research of American educational historiography for a lifetime. Not only did he write books to express his own idea, but also trained up many excellent scholars of educational historiography, such as Cubberley. Therefore, this article takes Monroe as a breakthrough, and then makes profound analysis on his idea of educational historiography as well as his place and influence on the history of American educational historiography. Sincerely, the writer here is looking forward to broadening the research in the field by this way.This article can be divided into five parts: the first one will introduce the value of Monroe's idea of American educational historiography, explain the domestic and foreign literatures already found, and present the structure and research measures of this article; the second one will introduce Monroe's educational experience and the social background of his idea of educational historiography, which can make a foundation for the following deep research; the third one is the principal part of the article. In this part the writer will focus on the clue along which Monroe's idea changed between two different stages and then compare them. In every stage the writer will research Monroe's idea of educational historiography from three aspects, that is, the view of educational historiography, the view of material of educational history and the measure of educational historiography. By this way, the outline of Monroe's change on his idea of educational historiography can be obtained; the forth one is also a main part of this article. In this part, the writer will make clear that what Monroe's idea of educational historiography inherited former scholars and then how influenced the ones nowadays abroad. Of course, the above-mentioned aim must base on former research and development of American educational historiography. Only in this way, can Monroe's historical contributions be attained logically; in the final part, the writer will analyze the epochal characteristic of Monroe's idea of educational historiography and the new research measures on it. Obviously all the contents will base on writer's own research realization.
