Monroe was a well-known American educator of the world in the first half of the 20th century. He came to China to investigate education, give lectures and engage in cultural exchange more than ten times during 1920s-1940s in the 20th century, making great contribution to Sino-Us cultural and educational exchange in modern times. However, for a long time, academic circles at home and abroad have paid little attention to it because of Dewey's dazzling gloss in the field of education. On the basis of systematical investigation of Monroe's all previous visit to China, from the perspective of educational exchange between China and other countries, the paper has a relatively deep analysis and exploration of the relationship between Monroe and returned Chinese students, Monroe and Educational System in 1922, Monroe and the Chinese primary and middle school reform during 1920s-1940s, Monroe and the China Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture as well as China Institute in America, trying hard to explore subtleties, search deepness and make the history emerge. By hard study, the thesis draws a conclusion that Monroe has exerted a profound influence on the educational development of China in modern times and made an unique contribution at the aspect of talents cultivation, educational reform, social transformation as well as cultural and educational exchange.The thesis includes five parts besides preface and epilogue.The first part gives a detailed introduction about Monroe's educational activities at Teachers College, Columbia university in America, especially his training for the Chinese students and the deep friendship between he and the Chinese students during he took charge of the Advanced School of Education and the International Institute.The second part displays concretely the historical process of Monroe's association with China through the investigation of his previous visit to China.The third part elaborates Monroe's opinion about the reform of educational system and analyses his contribution to the Educational System in 1922, pointing out Monroe's visit to China promoted the institutional innovation of Chinese education.The forth part analyses Monroe's concrete guidance to the reform of Chinese primary and middle schools during 1920s-1930s in the 20th century, affirming Monroe's visit to China has a profound influence on it.The fifth part pays much attention to discuss Monroe's role in the process of the establishment, the reorganization and the confirmation of the basic principles of the China Foundation for the promotion of Education and Culture as well as China Institute in America's, analyzing his contribution from corporation's preparation and operation.
