| The talent is a key point to scientific and technological innovation. The competition between countries has been the competition of talents since we entered the 21st century. To build an innovative and strong country, we should focus on the development of science and technology (S&T) human resources for the new requirement in the 21st century. With the switch of engineering education from practice-oriented to science-oriented since the second half of the 20th century, the engineering talents in various countries have been better and better in theory skills while they are weaker and weaker in other skills such as practice. On the basis of analyzing the present situation of developing S&T human resources at home and abroad, especially the situation of cultivating engineers, this paper introduced the CDIO concept and proposed a new mode named CIO-CDIO for the development of S&T human resources.Based on the understanding of Chinese and foreign experts about S&T human resources, the paper defined the S&T human resources, analyzed the present situation of S&T talents development in America, Europe, South Africa and China, and most importantly put forward the problems and deficiencies in the development of S&T talents in China. Following this, the paper introduced the CDIO concept, describing, in detail, its theory basis, targets, themes, vision, syllabus and standards, analyzing and comparing the application of CDIO in MIT in America, Shantou University in China and South Africa. By referring the successful experiences of the three cases, the paper finally proposed the new mode named CIO-CDIO for the development of S&T human resources, discussing the situation where the mode would be applied, so that, the CDIO mode could be adopted and implemented in our country. |
