China is a multi-national country with a wealth of national traditional culture. However, a great many national traditional cultures have been disappearing in recent years due to various reasons. Multi-cultural education which rose in western developed countries in the 1960s and 1970s bring a glimmer for the development of traditional ethnic culture in China. Meanwhile, a new reform in the curriculum of elementary education has set a pattern of developing and managing curriculum at three levels, which will provide a wide space and system safeguard for multi-cultural education in ethnic minority areas. Multi-cultural education provides ideas and concepts for the outstanding culture of ethnic minorities into the curriculum. And school-based curriculum development provides advisable approaches in promoting minority cultures into the curriculum. Combination of the two will benefit to the nation's outstanding cultural development diversely. The essay aims at exploring the development of ethnic minority culture in school with traditional culture of miao nationality in the region of South East of GuiZhou as a case under the guidance of the above mentioned thought. It is believed that the positive attempt in integrating multi-cultural education and school-based curriculum development will not only embody the unity of the country, but also reflect the differences in ethnic minority areas as well. The body of this thesis consists of six chapters:Chapters one deals with the introduction of the thesis, which mainly expounds the research background, ideas, and methodology.Part two focuses on a general survey about multi-cultural education and introductions of the status quo about multi-cultural education both at home and abroad as well as its significance to minority education.Part three undertakes to study the school-based curriculum in general and introduce its status quo both at home and abroad as well as its role to minority education. And explore the point of integration about multi-cultural education and school-based curriculum development.Part four manages to understand the present status of the school-based curriculum development of miao nationality culture in the region of South East of GuiZhou through interviews, questionnaires, visiting, etc.Part five involves in the construction of school-based curriculum, including objectives, content, structure, teaching and evaluation.Part six tries to put up with some methods to solve the difficulty in school-based curriculum development and have a general view of the prospect.
