Based on research of the famous 20th century educator Yen Yangchu's mass education thought and its practice, the learning values of mass education thought and its practice to advance the modernization of today's rural area was studied in combination with present China's rural realities, in order to benefit the construction of a new socialist countryside during this new period.The whole article is divided into three parts except introduction and the concluding remarks.The latest status of the study, writing ideas and research methods are described briefly in the introduction. The writer also defines some concepts involved in the article.The first part is about the summarized accounts of Yen's mass education. On the basis of the social investigation, Yen Yangchu's thought Chinese peasants are illiterate, poor, weak and selfish, and he put forward a solution through the four educations, literary and art education hygienic education, citizen education, livelihood education. He drew up the enforcement ways of the four educations, school, social and family education. Mr. Yen hoped to transform the entire life by giving the nation the equal education chance through the four educations and three ways.The second part is about the practice of Yen's mass education thought. Experiments in the rural area of Ding country from 1924 to 1937 and Huaxi country from 1946 to 1949 are emphasized.The third part is about the present inspiration of Yen's mass education thought.Seventy years of the mass education practice proves that Yen's thought plays an important role in improving the rural education, promoting the peasants qualities. Yen Yangchu's mass education thought is believed also has strongly vitality and is significant for building the socialist modernization when we review the thought in the beginning of 21st century.The terse conclusion of article is given out at the last part. The writer thought promoting the peasants qualities should be started from education to get rid of illiterate, poor, weak and selfish when a modern efficient political community was set up. It must be the basic and efficient way to resolve the issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers. Now we should devote china education to promote the all mass qualities not to nurture and develop several talents. That is to say, Yen Yangchu's mass education thought and its practice has more and more value as times go by.
