English reading plays an important role in English learning, and also a difficult part for English teaching. For English ability development and NMET, it requires paying more attention to. However, traditional teaching methods emphasize the teaching for English vocabulary and grammar. In reading teaching, intensive reading is widely used. It's a usual practice to study a text sentence by sentence, because it is commonly thought that text is the integrated application of English pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.Nowadays, many senior students are admitted into the universities through the entrance examination, but their reading ability is far from the requirements of college English. Some students are used to studying English text sentence by sentence, trying to make sense of the meaning of every sentence and word. When they meet some long passages, they read them carefully and slowly by referring to the dictionaries. It costs more time and efforts with less effects to read in that way.Recently, experts and educators abroad and at home all advocate the method of combinating intensive reading and extensive reading. A large part of teachers realize reading extensively is a very effective way to improve students' reading ability and begin to use the method by reading a lot of passages. However, they directly use the passages from the reading exercises without choosing carefully according to the students they teach. As a result, the students get less improvement while doing so much reading. In this article, First of all, some theories related to reading, reading psychology and teaching methods are introduced. Secondly, the author summarizes some advantages and disadvantages through the classroom observations and interviews with some senior high school English teachers. Thirdly, referring to some scientific theories, the author suggests some effective methods for teaching extensive reading. Finally, the method is tested in two classes in senior two. After the experiment, it is obvious that the students are more interested in English reading and their reading ability gets improved. All the research is valuable for English teaching. Considering the number of students receiving the test and the limited time for the experiment, the result is not perfect.
