The Ancient Academy's University Spirit And Its Realistic Meaning

The ancient academy, appearing before Chinese modern higher education organization, was a kind of higher education institute affected greatly ancient China. It has made the extremely important contribution for Chinese traditional culture extension and development. The ancient academy was not only the place where the teachers taught and the students studied, but also an important base for the ancient gentlemen study the inheritance of culture and the implementation of enlightenment. As a key education institution, The ancient academy had the unique university characteristics and spirit. But as a result of the end of the Qing West civilization invasion as well as academy's own reason, the academies which continued more than 1000 years finally had to be changed into new style schools. Hereafter, the academy tradition and spirit also fell into long-term dreariness. Today, facing the challenge of higher education globalization, we not merely need to pursue with the mainstream tradition of world higher education, but also need to review and inherit our own great education tradition. This article studies the ancient academy's spirit just for the sake of making full use of its rich education thought resources, thus provides practical and feasible choice however and should however for our modern university spirit construction.This article is mainly divided into three parts to conduct the research. The first part is the ancient academy's characteristics and spirit. Firstly discussing the academic characteristics in such aspects as the choice of teachers, the origin of students, the content of learning and the scholar research ,then putting an emphasis on academy's spirit. This spirit is the essence of academy as well as the most typical characteristics of academy. This essential spirit embodies in four aspects: Humanities, independent, compatible and critique spirit. The second part mainly analyzes why the ancient academy spirit was changed. Academy's spirit was the academy's intrinsic essence, it developed along with the academy's development;On the other hand, it was inevitably changed and dissimulated with the academy nature's changing. Academy's officially owning directly caused the academy spirit changing from technicality to politicization, but the China traditional culture influence was the deep reason. Third part mainly researches the academy spirit's practical significance in Chinese modern university spirit construction process. On one hand the ancient academy manifested the humanities spirit whose core was the moral self-control, its independent style even under the despotic suppression and the persistence of Chinese intellectual's critique tradition. These outstanding spirits all are worth us carrying on to it unscramble, it has the important enlightenment to the Chinese modern university spirit construction.
