Motivation is generally considered as one of the main determinants of second/foreign language learning achievement.In the new curriculum standard for senior high English,students' emotion,attitude and value are particularly emphasized in English teaching,in which motivation is one of the main elements.However,the motivation factors are often ignored in practice.As an English teacher,the author of the thesis often feels it frustrating to see unmotivated students in the English class.So this thesis mainly examines the different categories of motivation,(?)tifies and analyzes five motivational variables and offers some suggestions for English teachers.Chapter One is the introduction,which elaborates the significance and background of motivation.Chapter Two gives an overall description of the definition of motivation and provide a different classification in psychology and linguistics.Chapter Three reports a study,in which the author identifies and investigates the following five motivational variables -motivation type, learning goal,gender,expectancy and causal attribution to analyze the effect of the factors and motivation behavior. Chapter Four analyzes and discusses the result of the study.Chapter Five states the implication for English teachers.
