A Study On English Learning Strategy Used By Junior School Students Of Shenzhen In Bilingual Education

In the 21st century,English is becoming more and more important in the international communication due to the globalization,especially after the country's accession to the World Trade Organization and Beijing becoming the host city for 2008 Olympic Games.Thus,to learn a foreign language successfully means to acquire the skill of using the target language properly and exactly in different social situations. Bilingual education is a teaching method which is from the western countries,it aims to improve our English learners' level in order to make them satisfy the demand of the quick development of the society.At present,it is the hot point to be discussed by the educational field.In this paper,the writer reviews the related theories about the bilingual education and language learning strategies,especially three kinds of language learning strategies which was classified by O'Malley & Chamot,namely cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies and social/affective strategies.From the survey,the author gets the following conclusion,that is,bilingual education can make the learning goal in English Curriculum Standard to be realized in a short time.And the students' abilities in listening,speaking,reading,writing and vocabulary study are improved rapidly in bilingual education.Furthermore,the students who are good at using learning strategies in English learning make their English learning progress rapidly and efficiently.The author tries to prove the conclusion by carrying out the questionnaires to 300 students in Grade Two of three middle schools in Shenzhen.The author also has the scene interview to 50 students after the bilingual lesson Politics.The result shows that language learning strategies are very important for English learning,especially in bilingual education.This research consists of six chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the origin of proposing the research and the significance of the research.Chapter 2 introduces the related theories concerning about language learning strategies and bilingual education.The research is based on these theories.The classifications of O'Malley & Chamot are fully analyzed.And the bilingual education in Shenzhen is introduced in very details.Chapter3 covers the research questions,subjects' selection, instruments,and the data collection.Chapter 4 explains the whole procedure of the research and analyzes the results of the research.Chapter 5 discusses the findings and limitations of the research.Chapter 6 gives some suggestions to the future English teaching and learning.The research questions are the followings:1) What is the general situation of the language learning strategies used by Shenzhen Junior School students in bilingual education?2) How do the students use the cognitive strategies meta-cognitive strategies and social/affective strategies in listening,speaking,reading, writing and vocabulary study in bilingual education?3) How do the students use these strategies to solve the problems in listening,speaking,reading,writing and vocabulary study in order to be adapted to the bilingual education?...
