Student assessment in colleges and universities has been an intrinsic part of higher education process as well as a major mean of teaching management, which lays foundations of various higher education evaluation and assessment activities and plays a key role in decisions relating to teaching and learning. Student assessment is the important part of higher education evaluation. But in china, the research and practice on student assessment in colleges and universities is always the weakness of development of higher education, which can not adapt request of china's higher education. In order to enhance student assessment in colleges and universities, this paper choose E university student assessment practice as the case to have a systemic and thorough rearch.This paper analyse from student assessment concept, and then discuss functions, gist,standard,procedures means,types of student assessment in colleges and universities and the principles of good student assessment. Based on this,I describe and analyse student assessment background, policy and system, practice of student assessment , exist problems by using investigation research means. At last I have a systemic and thorough discusss about how to improve china's student assessment policy and practice.From the research, we know that exist student assessment is an achievement assessment system whose assessment content is based on special knowledge, whose assessment means is based on examination. Problem include that student assessment policy is not perfect; the function of assessment is maily for the summarization;E university does not have the core skills for students; actual assessment content differs from school policy aim and students and teachers' expectation; means of assessment is simplify; teachers are short of training of assessment skills;student assessment actually affect student little. For these problems, I provide some suggestions. These suggestions mainly include :form core skills of E university,set up special committee of assesment,set up special website and period of student assessment,improve the practice of teacher assessing student,provide student assessment policy and knowledge resource supports,improve the role of students in assessment,diversify content,means and main body of student assessment,improve the effect of feedback of student assessment information.
