The motto is the reflection and summary of the times and university'idea. It is the spiritual garden that teachers and students yearn for .It is also the soul and flag of a school and leaders of universities pay attention to it all the time .The comprehension of universities and colleges'mottoes is the key to the study of campus culture and characteristics. We can knowledge the core spirit and distinguishing factors through the motto of university. It just likes a culture tag of college ,which exhibits the profound historical culture succession of college and their vivid individualities and features. It will have theoretical as well as practical significance in advocating the college ideology, rationalizing the college instruction, and inspiring teachers and students. So research the motto of the university is important for condensing and highlighting university spirit and founding universities of first-class in the world.The author has collected more than 200 mottoes of universities and relevant materials by referring to the history of these universities, and has penetrated to culture background. The study of the university motto has been finished by the use of literature index method, summarization of experience approach and comparative method. First, it has been begun with survey of the university's motto, concluding the concept of motto ,the basic character and emergence's way. The university's motto is an important part of campus culture of university, it is the epitome of college management ideology , the requirement of talent cultivation and the spirit of university. The motto has four features: academic, contemporary, stability and particularity. Meanwhile, it also has four emergence's ways: quote the classics, celebrity's saying, leaders'inscription or headmasters'proposal and democratic centralism.Next, analyzing the relevance between the university of motto and the spirit of university and campus culture and discussing their function. It can be concluded that we must carry out the university's motto and cultivate the university'spirit and construct campus'culture. Then, by comparing the motto of Chinese with foreign university, it can be found that there are some defects in Chinese universities'mottoes. So putting forward some measures to construct the motto of Chinese university and summing up the different characters between the motto of Chinese and foreign university.Finally the value of the university'motto is discussed from different angles: culture function, educational function and social function. In order to enrich the relevant theories on university ideology as well as to make university moral instruction into a full practice and realize its value.
