Chinese modern university was born in an unrest society and in that time people lived in destitution,but it struggled tenaciously between foreign strong military attack and domestic dark tyranny,and finally it not only survived and shaped its' unique organizational culture style but also bear rich fruit.But there are so many shortcomings such as convergence and similarity in the organizational culture of today's university.So this thesis researched on the organizational culture of Chinese modern universities in order to provide inspiration and reference for the construction of organizational culture in present universities,which has strong theoretical and practical significance.The organizational culture is complex and complicated,and related research is also abundant.So this thesis focused on the motto of university to truly,accurately and deeply study on the experience about construction of the Chinese modern university organizational culture to serve the present.By analyzing and summarizing the concepts of university organizational culture,this thesis made a definition for the university organizational culture,that is the combination of values,system norm,behavior pattern and university image which were identified and complied by people of the university and it formated gradually in the process of the university handling it's internal and external relationships and things.And the university organizational culture was divided into four parts,that is material culture,behavior culture,institutional culture and spiritual culture.Between these four parts,spiritual culture occupied the core position and played a leading role for other three cultures.The motto concentrated and embodied the school-running idea,school history,value pursuit and traditional spirit of the university,which is the concise expression of the university spiritual culture.So,the motto played an important role in the construction of university organizational culture.Based on the above understanding,this thesis studied on the Ginling College,private Nankai University and the Southwestern Associated University.From the study,it could find that even though the times,the place of the university,teachers and students were changed,and so many new things were injected into it,the motto was always in the construction of these three universities' organizational culture,and it made the construction of the three universities' organizational culture had a main line,soul and personality.Based on the motto to study the organizational culture of Chinese modern university and considered the situation of the construction of present university organizational culture,it told us that we should attach great importance to the effect of the motto in the construction of university organizational culture.When the motto was to be established,it should return to the essence ofthe university and set it with the soul in order to play the role of motto and highlight the development history and unique personality of the university.When the motto was to be practised,it should have a resonance,so the students and teachers could practise it from their hearts,and also make the motto be more and more new and abundant in the practice of students and teachers and the development of the university.When the motto was formed,we should practise it down-to-earth and insist on it firmly in order to make the university grasp it's development direction,destination and pursuit in all kinds of thoughts racing today to realize it's connotation and personality.
