So far, the “learning-material orientation” study has not yet been fully covered, but thepossible prospect can be anticipated from the compilation of Junior English experimentaltextbook Go for It, published by People’s Education Press, suggesting a strong purposive andoperational on “learning-material orientation”. The new textbook, attempting to combinetopic, communication functions and language structures, forms a progressive series oflife-oriented learning program. It lays emphasis on the study in experience, providesconvenience to study, and makes the students enjoy themselves in studying. In the teachingpractice of using the textbook, teachers generally feel compelled to transformteacher-centered education into student-centered learning, and thus, textbook as teachingmaterials transformed into learning materials. Even though the title “learning material” hasnot been coined and accepted, there does exist some theories and relevant practice andapplications. This study inherits the previous study findings, and turns the researchers’ notionof "learning-material" orientation into students’ actions of learning practice. This study adopts an interventional field study method, based on the record of the normalcourses listening in three middle schools, as well as a survey conducted in these three schools, the problems of textbook using would be found as respectively:1) teachers monopoly of thetextbook;2) passive use of the textbook by students;3) lacks in personalized experience inusing. The possible causes could be attributed to the following factors:1) The students’ poorEnglish skills confine the autonomy learning;(2) Students reluctance to spend time onlearning English duce to weak learning initiative;(3) Being influenced by the baton of mark, teachers’ monopoly of the textbook resulted from the stress of the students’ scores, andneglect the cultivation of ability and creativity; and finally, the study suggests such measuresmust be taken to improve the problems, as1) improving the learning autonomy;2) maximumcatering for the learner’s needs;3) making English learning a happy life experience.Autonomous learning and cooperative inquiry learning methods, promoted by the newcurriculum reform, provide an opportunity for the practice of learning-materials transformation of textbook. This study plans to elaborate the course design oflearning-material orientation textbook and implementation of the course design into teachingpractice based on needs analysis, teaching objectives setting, teaching material selection, displaying teaching content and exercises, self testing. It demonstrates to the teachers andstudents how to adapt and develop "learning-material orientated" textbook correctly.
