| With the reform of the new curriculum, especially with the development of English teaching in the primary schools, there occurred many changes in China's English teaching in the compulsive education period. One of the major issues is how to make the English teaching of primary schools and junior middle schools match each other or we may call it a good linking. So it is the purpose of this research to investigate the status quo of the linking between the English teachings of primary and junior middle schools and what improvement we can do about it.In this thesis, I chose three local junior middle schools, two local primary schools and one local school with a schooling period of nine years (covering from primary school to junior middle school) to be my research object. In the hope to reveal the status quo of the linking between the English teaching and learning of primary and junior middle schools, I conducted questionnaires among the students and teachers of these schools, concerning two main points: the teaching and the learning. The result of this research can be summarized as follows:1) Considering from the content and structure, we can see a good linking between primary and junior middle schools in the aspect of the teaching material of English, but more improvement is required.2) We can also see a good linking between the curriculum standards of primary and junior middle schools, but the point is how to make sure the teaching and learning of English follows the instruction of the standards.3) With the improving and increasing of the quality and quantity of primary school teachers of English, the unbalance between the teachers of primary and junior middle schools is disappearing.4) In the aspect of evaluation, we can find that the linking is OK by comparing the content and structure of the graduation English exams of primary school with those of junior middle school. But one thing needs to be improved for both schooling period is the emphasis on the evaluation of the oral English teaching and learning. 5) From the result of the survey of the students, we can see that most of them think they can go on well with their English learning when they finish their primary school study and go on with their study of junior middle school English. But when we consider the result of the survey of the teachers, no change seems to have taken place in the situation where there has still been an absence of the communication or contact between English teachers of primary and junior middle schools.6) From this research, I find that there's a good communication between the teachers of primary school and those of junior middle school in the school with a schooling period of nine years. So this provides us with a good reference to how to improve the communication between the English teaching of primary and junior middle schools. But almost all the teachers of English in this school think that the good linking doesn't seem to be as beneficial as in the beginning period (e.g. Grade 7) when it goes on to the later period (e.g. Grade 8 or 9).At the end of the thesis, some suggestions are made for the matching between the English teaching of primary and junior middle schools. |
