Objective To investigate the occupational stress and analyze it's major influencing factors of teachers in primary and middle schools in Nanhai district, Guangdong province, as well as provide some pointed guidance to release their pressure.Methods A sample of 741 primary and middle school teachers in Nanhai district were studied with the Occupational Stress Inventory Revised Edition (OSI-R) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). The influencing factors of their strain were analyzed with structural equation model.Results The overall situation of their occupational role, personal strain and personal resources are in normal scopes. Male teachers reported higher scores on occupational role and personal resources than the females. The females feel higher psychological strain. The young teachers meet more role insufficiency and role ambiguity, also have more strain. The teachers over 40 years old have better personal resources than other age groups. The teachers with higher professional titles have less role insufficiency and ambiguity, more personal resources, and less strain. Head-teachers and teachers in charge of graduating classes reported higher scores on role overload. Head-teachers have less personal resources, and more personal strain. Compared with teachers in primary schools, teachers in middle schools have more problems in occupational role, less personal resources, and more strain. The teachers in province-level schools reported higher scores on occupational role and personal strain than those of lower levels. 78.7% teachers' personality are introvert or prone to introvert. 99.7% teachers' emotions are stable or prone to stable. The structural equation model of the influencing factors of the teachers' occupational strain indicates the total effect of the factors - occupational role, personal resource, personality, longevity and sex are 0.66, -0.58, 0.31, -0.15, -0.01. Occupational role and personal resource affect personal strain directly, whereas personality and longevity affect it indirectly.Conclusions The occupational stress of teachers in primary and middle schools is serious. The main influencing factors of their strain are occupational role, personal resource, personality and longevity.
