This article analyzes the fact that in an examination-oriented education system college enrolment rate has been the single criterion to evaluate the education of schools. It follows that college enrolment rate and exam performance is the criteria for teachers'evaluation which has put teachers under a lot of pressure. The implementation of the new curriculum reform brought changes to education. Under this circumstance what is the main task of teachers? The writer conducted a research on this through questionnaire, interviews and surveys among chemistry teachers from Suzhou high school, covering their overall opinions about the new curriculum reform, the changes of their teaching task, research, and other related areas. This article introduced the teaching of chemistry teachers in high school in this city, analyzing the reasons of the changes of their work caused by the reform. This research involved chemistry teachers from different kinds of schools and different grades, showing the changes of their main task in category, as opposed to their former work before the reform. The writer also offered some suggestions for improvement to the writer of the new textbook, trainers of the new curriculum reform, education administrators, schools as well as teachers themselves. This research is intended to reflect the implementation of the new curriculum reform, thus providing valuable data and suggestions for the next reform.
