As for the current English teaching in junior high school, most students' reading ability is inferior to the curriculum requirements. The phenomenon of "high input, low output in the teaching of reading" is widespread. Therefore, it is the most urgent task for us to observe the classroom teaching of English reading, to analyse the reasons that affect the students' reading ability, to find out the problems in teaching of English reading and then to look for a solution to help students improve their reading ability quickly and effectively. In this study, a preliminary investigation about the status and problems in teaching of English reading in junior high school is carried out in the way of questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations.The investigation includes the following four areas:1) students' reading situation in class; 2) teachers' teaching situation of English reading in class; 3) teachers' application of the theories about reading and teaching of reading; 4) teachers' implementation of evaluation of reading.The survey results are as followed: 1) students are lack of interest in reading and puzzled in reading goals; 2) students' reading behaviors are offset; 3) teachers' goal of classroom teaching of reading is deviated; 4) the classroom teaching of reading patterns tend to be single. 5) the frequency of students' using reading strategies is not high, neither is their reading efficiency; 6) the evaluation of students' reading results mostly come from the test subjects.Based on the survey, this article is making recommendations on the teaching of English reading: 1) Set a clear goal for teaching of English reading. 2)Stimulate students' interest in reading. 3)Strengthen the training of students' reading strategies. 4) Create and use the students' reading portfolio in order to standardize students' reading habits.
