A Study On The Ethical Values Of Foreign Literature In Chinese Textbooks

Although some scholars and educators research into ethical issues in foreign literary works, it is regrettable that there are few researches on the ethical values of foreign literature in Chinese textbooks. This thesis is a study on the ethical values of foreign literature in Chinese textbooks which will use literary ethics criticism, comparative method and induction to make an exposition.The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter I introduces the origin, significance and methods of the study. It is made up of three parts. The first part is about the ethics involved in the new curriculum standards in the teaching of Chinese in secondary school. The second part sets forth the educational value of ethics in foreign literature. The third part is a brief introduction of the research methods of the study on the ethical values of foreign literature in Chinese textbooks. Based on the Chinese textbooks (Book 1--Book 5) from Jiangsu Education Press, Chapter II analyses the values of the relationship of environmental ethics, interpersonal ethics and personality ethics so as to help us to have a profound thinking and understanding of nature, society and life. Chapter III discusses the selection of foreign literary works from the angle of ethics. The paper first presents the reforms of the selection in secondary school in different periods. The second part tells the advantages of the present arrangement. The last part points out the improvementIn the conclusion part, the thesis affirms the peculiarity of the ethical value of foreign literary works; analyses the differences between the East and the West in environmental ethics, interpersonal ethics and personality ethics; emphasizes the necessity of adding foreign literary works and the significance of a good grasp of ethics in teaching.
