Autonomy learning has been a heated topic in foreign language teaching and research since the 1990s. Many experts have discussed this topic from different aspects. In China, the newly-issued English Course Standard also requests that autonomy learning ability should be an aim for foreign language teaching. For example, Regular High School English Course Standard points out that designs and operations of high school English teaching should help to improve students' studying methods. Students should hold active attitudes toward studies by observing, experiencing and researching. In this way, students can develop their potential, effective studying strategies and autonomy learning ability. Besides, autonomy learning can help students learn how to use computers and information resources. Thus students are guaranteed to have more ways to learn and develop their own learning styles.However, in current situation of foreign language teaching, English teachers have been greatly influenced by traditional concepts and the policies of the Entrance Examinations to College, which leads to students' poor autonomy learning ability. Teaching researches have showed that autonomy learning is very important to students. Autonomy learning ability plays an active part in education. As for an English teacher, s/he should realize that it is an important duty to develop students' autonomy learning ability.The writer hopes that this research can help English teachers to focus on the training of students' autonomy learning ability and help them to find their own ways to do so from different situations. Only in this way can students be independent and efficient in learning and benefit in the lifelong study.
