Reading is regarded as a sociocultural skill in modern society (Anderson, 2003). Reading is learners' main channels to acquire knowledge and information. In a sense, reading ability is the key to success in learning a foreign language well. Although reading plays an important role in the development of the overall linguistic competence among the four skill training courses, SEFC reading teaching does not achieve satisfactory results. With the New English Curriculum Standard reformed, further research into effective reading models is becoming paramount. It contributes not only to the theoretical development of reading, but also to the improvement of the quality of reading instructions. In order to make reading instructions more efficient and get students to read more effectively and initiatively, the author puts forward the hypothesis that the transactional model of reading will help to improve students' reading ability. However, what's Transactional Model of Reading? What effects does the Transactional Model of Reading have on Senior High School students' reading ability? Few literatures in this area can be found. Therefore, the author aims to make a study of the relationship between the Transactional Model of Reading and high school students' reading ability. An experiment is carried out to prove this hypothesis. In the experiment, 128 students from two classes of Senior Grade Three will be chosen as the subjects, with 64 students in the experimental group and 64 in the control group . Two periods of reading instructions occur every week. The study will last for 23 weeks, with the beginning and the ending week allocated for testing. The qualitative data obtained from the questionnaire and the reading comprehension pre-test and pro-test will be transcribed and analyzed. The data collected during the process of the experiment proves that(1) Rosenblatt's transactional perspective on reading is effective in the improvement of Senior High School students' reading competence.(2) The Transactional Model of Reading is applicable to the students of Senior Grade Three. The scores achieved by the students in the low proficiency group improved the most. A successful teacher should be capable of creating a cooperative classroom atmosphere, stimulating language use and providing a range of learning opportunities for students of all levels and abilities.(3) An effective approach to improving reading teaching is to make reading in EFL as information accessibility and aesthetic accessibility. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of the Transactional Model of Reading are discussed and analyzed, and further suggestions for the improvement of the students' reading ability with the help of the Transactional Model of Reading are made.
