The National English Curriculum for Senior High Schools(experimental version)points out that students should be able to “scan the specific information,do a simple judge and inference,understand the logical structure of the text,understand the author’s intention and guess the meaning of new words” in the process of reading.Thus,students should think it a lot to understand the text.In fact,the reading process is a process in which students think it.Therefore,the cultivation of thinking ability should be stressed in English reading class.However,there are some problems in English reading class at senior high school.It includes that the language knowledge is mainly taught and the reading questions are lack of arousing thinking.That can not contribute to cultivate students’ thinking ability.Thus,this paper defines students’ thinking ability as prediction ability,guess ability,inference ability and evaluation and judgment ability in English reading based on the National English Curriculum for Senior High Schools(experimental version)and the teaching model of three stages and five steps in English reading class based on the cultivation of students’ thinking ability is put forward regarding the Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives and the Interactive-Compensatory Approach as the theoretical basis.The experiment research method is used and 100 students from Class 15 Grade 1 and Class 16 Grade 1 of No.3 Senior High School in Liaocheng of Shandong Province are the research subjects.Class 15 is the experimental class and Class 16 is the controlled class.An eighteen-week teaching experiment is done in which the teaching model of three stages and five steps in English reading class based on the cultivation of thinking ability is used in the experimental class while the traditional reading teaching model is used in the controlled class.The researcher uses the software of SPSS22.0 to analyze the data including the reading grade in pre-experiment and post-experiment.Its aim is to observe the change of students’ thinking ability.The research question is as follows:Can the teaching model of three stages and five steps in English reading class based on the cultivation of thinking ability improve students’ thinking ability?Thinking ability includes the following aspects.(1)Prediction ability(2)Guess ability(3)Inference ability(4)Evaluation and judgment abilityThe research shows that the teaching model of three stages and five steps in English reading class based on the cultivation of thinking ability can improve students’ thinking ability of prediction,guess,inference and evaluation and judgment.
