With the appearance of the information age, the education of information literacy, the necessary skills of information age, has aroused widespread concern around the world, and gradually added to the goals of education in all schools and evaluation systems. Information literacy education, especially the information literacy education in colleges and universities has been acknowledged as both a theoretical and a practical issue with great research values in the educational, academic and even the public concern.As a country starting early in information literacy education, the USA is at the forefront of the world with a wealth of experience and achievements in colleges and universities' the information literacy education and research. A more systematic and deeper collation and research on information literacy education in American colleges and universities is of great significance on China's development of information literacy education.This paper, in combination with the existent conditions of its own, has made a deeper research and analysis based on careful study and summary of related works. It mainly includes the following work: the analysis of the theory of information literacy, including the meaning and component system of information literacy; the systematic study of information literacy education in the United States as a whole, including the relevant organizations and its theoretical standards; and the study on the important theoretical achievements of information literacy education in American colleges and universities—Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, including the relevant circumstances and the specific contents. Subsequently, it analyzes and studies several high-impact and representative information literacy education projects in American colleges and universities. The information literacy education of American colleges and universities has been effective and successful, which are worthy of our learning. This paper features a number of experiences and ideas of American information literacy education in colleges and universities for the enlightenment to China.
