Chinese subject education became independent in the later Qing Dynasty. At the same time Chinese textbooks came out, then it vigorously developed during the period of the Republic of China. How did it become independent and develop? The textbooks in the later Qing Dynasty and Republic of China can tell the story. On the basis of materials between 1897 and 1922,the research analyzes the changes of Chinese textbooks in this period from the scope of the contents of textbooks. This thesis includes four parts. The first chapter.Introduction.This part gives an account of the origin of the research and centers on the definition of concepts which are ambiguous. Then it analyzes and sums up the available study on the textbooks, including Chinese textbooks,of modern times and raises the importance of this research. The general line of thought is:Choosing 9 sets of Chinese textbooks of primary school by influence as standard,we then judges the contents directly so as to describe the changes of the textbooks in this period. The second chapter.Historical narration and Scope selection. Taking the later Qing Dynasty and Republic of China as a whole,it narrates briefly the publishing of textbooks from the point of different publishers. The textbooks have three categories:school textbooks, textbooks from new type presses and authoritative textbooks. On the basis of this narration,we determine 9 sets of Chinese textbooks as objects of study by influence as standard. The third chapter.Micro-perspective:analysis of forms of changes. This part traces the paths of changes from micro-perspective and uses it as the background of the next chapter. From the contents of the 8 sets of textbooks chosen,we find obvious changes in several themes:nation, character and animal. The fourth chapter.Macro-perspective:Analysis of the characteristics of changes. We find several characteristics of the paths of changes through the third chapter. The theme of the times has changed leading to the change of Chinese textbooks in content to democracy, science and freedom. It has also become closer to life and children as the views of education have changed. In the path of changes, the founding of the Republic of China and New Culture Movement are the two turning points.
