| Athletics is an ancient sport. It emerges and develops along with the human history, from the basic body movement (walk, run, jump and throw) to today's most popular competitive sport which attracted worldwide attention. Athletics can reflect the competition and counterwork of speed, strength and endurance; it constantly presents the glamour of sport to the audience, taps the latent power and promotes the capacity of human being. As a very important sport and the basic of all sports, athletics play a crucial part in school physical education. Along with the curriculum reform in colleges and universities, new ideas and events emerge one after another; meanwhile, with the course selection appears in sport, athletics in colleges and universities has met a tough situation and sluggish development.This paper uses the questionnaire method to investigate the physical education situation in normal colleges and universities of Wuhan district. The result shows that the basic situation of physical education situation in normal colleges and universities of Wuhan district is still far from being satisfactory. The main course will be as follow: the impact of other sports within the course selection; teaching content; equipment; assessment; teaching material; outdoor activities; teachers and the lack of athletics culture in campus. From the analysis of the courses above, the paper made some suggestion which may be beneficial for the sustainable development of athletics education in colleges and universities.
