| The issue of student dropout is a difficult educational problem which has attracted great attention. Student dropout not only badly hinders their own development, affects the development of human resources and the improvement of all the citizens' accomplishment, but also buries hidden troubles in the society. After world war two, particularly since the 1960s, the issues of student dropout in rural America become a social hot. U. S. governments and all circles adopted a great deal of measures to solve the problem and have obtained positive achievement. Compared with America, the issue of student dropout in rural China is more serious. So, researching on the issue of student dropout in rural America will provide us several important revelations. The thesis mainly consists of three parts as follows:The first part investigated the history of the issue of student dropout in rural America. In American history, with the development of rural education, the issue of student dropout which was exist in rural America for a long time has been increasingly prompted. After world war two, the pursuit of educational equity highlighted the seriousness of the problem of rural students' dropout. As a result, the issue has been paid much attention since the 1960s.The second part analyzed the reasons of America rural student dropout. Compared with urban areas, dropouts in rural America have their own particularity. From family factors, the number of students belonging to single-parent households or minority groups is larger. And, low socioeconomic status and educational attainment of parents, as well as frequent mobility of the rural family often accompany rural students; From school aspects, rural schools in America can't raise enough running funds, and the teachers' condition is poorer, educational reform is constantly in conflict with the rural culture; From students' own side, they generally hold negative self-concepts and make serious misbehavior. In addition, rural America has been confronting many difficulties, such as economic poverty, limited human resources.The third part elaborates the coping strategies of the issue of student dropout in rural America and several revelations the author obtained. After world war two, U.S. governments and all circles adopted a great deal of measures to solve the problem. In the first place, the federal government of United States vigorously developed the rural economy, optimized social resources in rural areas, provided rural education with more funds, and supported small and rural schools development. In the second place, rural schools actively carried out on teacher training, and strengthening connection between schools and rural communities. Furthermore, U.S. governments and all circles implemented many pertinent programs, including "Migrant Education Program" and "Learning Visions" program. According to their experiences, the author put forward the following suggestions: our government should guarantee the equal educational opportunities of disadvantaged children; school distribution adjustment must adapt to local conditions; rural students must share more superior social resources; the connection among the schools, parent and the rural communities should also be strengthened; finally, education for rural students should increase its pertinence. |
