With the implementation of the policy of expanding college enrollment, the quality of graduates has become an increasing concern. The motive for graduate students to study is one of the important factors that affects the quality of graduate education.The purpose of this study is to understand motives of the current physical graduates through investigation, and to study and analyze the problems existed in motives of physical master, and suggests solutions accordingly. Conclusions of this study are valuable for further stimulating physical graduates to learn, reducing their blindness in study and helping them develop good concept of learning and promoting their professional skills.This study is carried out on the Questionnaire on Learning Motives worked out by Huang Xiting. It was conducted between students of physical graduates from East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai Institute of Physical Education (SIPE) and Shanghai Normal University (SNU). Of the total 300 sample questionnaires issued, 287 questionnaires were recovered with a recovery rate of 95.7%, and 273 are valid questionnaires, that is, 91% are efficient. The following results are obtained from this study.(1) There are significant differences between grades and schools in the overall level of motives to learn, but the same gender has almost the same motive.(2) There are significant differences in the motives of study between the three schools in areas of knowledge seeking, material pursuit, small group orientation, individual achievement, fear of failure and social orientation. The mean scores of these six areas affecting study are (from high to low) personal achievements, knowledge seeking, small group orientation, material pursuit, fear of failure and social orientation. Overall, the later three motives are relatively weaker, and the first three are stronger.(3) Graduates from the three schools differs greatly in motives such as knowledge seeking, small group orientation, fear of failure, personal achievement and social orientation, but the motive of material pursuit is almost the same. (4) Female's individual achievement motive is significantly lower than that of Male's, while the motivate of fear of failure level is significantly higher than boys.(5)The motives of knowledge seeking, fear of failure and small group orientation differs significantly between grades.(6) Motives of knowledge seeking for male graduates from 3 schools vary greatly; there are also significant differences between females from the three schools.(7) The differences of motives between grades and gender shows that there's no big difference between males of different grades, while there are significant differences between females of different grades.(8) Motives of knowledge seeking, social orientation, material pursuit, fear of failure and small group orientation for male graduates from 3 schools vary greatly, while the motive of personal achievements is almost the same.(9) Motives of knowledge seeking, material pursuit, personal achievements and small group orientation for female graduates from 3 schools vary greatly, while the motives of social orientation and fear of failure is almost the same.
