Facing the problem of educating the mentally retarded people, many countries are striving to reform their education systems. Australian special education has developed since 1908, and now it has some merits for other countries to learn.The paper starts with an introductory chapter, describing present special education status in Australia. In the main body of the paper, the Australian government aids are thoroughly discussed and analyzed. The paper wraps up and summarizes general features, benefits and problems of Australian special education and suggests future directions. The thesis consists of five chapters with Chapter 1 as a general introduction, Chapter 2 to 4 as the main body and Chapter 5 as the conclusion.Chapter 1 is an introduction in which the issue is introduced, and the objectives, methodology as well as background information are provided.Chapter 2 looks into the historical development of the special education system in Australia, the present status of the system, and some government supports.Chapter 3 deals with the problems appeared in the present system: the growth in special education, the increasing costs, these people's future, and disadvantages of inclusion.Chapter 4 shows the suggestions to solve these problems.The last chapter summarizes the whole study and draws some conclusions.
