On The Family Education In The Song Dynasty

As it is known to all, Song Dynasty is an important dynasty in Chinese history, when remarkable achievements were made in various fields. Besides the three significant inventions in the world, many other important achievements in astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, medicine and academic thought have also aroused much concern and attention. In contrast, family education, to a certain extent, failed to attract enough attention, despite significant achievements in family education and a large number of well-known works on family education, in which rich and valuable views and family practice are well worth exploring in depth. This study explored the Song Dynasty family education at all different levels and also put forward some evaluations and analyses:This paper is divided into six parts:The first part is to give a definition about the family education which mainly include family education and the family education of Song Dynasty.The second part is to give a brief introduction of the background and causes of the flourish of family education in Song Dynasty, with emphasis on the deep reason of the flourish.The third part talks about the types and ways of the Song's family education. Family education was mainly carried out in four types of families: the imperial family, notable subjects' family, scholarly family and the common people's family. The main ways of training included teaching children with family instructions, poems, letters, family rules, proverbs and so on.The fourth part, which is also the main part of the essay, is about main contents of family education of Song Dynasty. Put simply, the Song's family education can be summed up in the following areas:family ethical moral education and cultivation morality education; education on how to behave oneself; education on governing family and the haruo education; prenatal education and early family education; science and technology education and so on.The fifth part summarizes the methods of Song's family education. Family education in the Song Dynasty has a wide range of educational methods, mainly reflected in the love combined with teaching love;forgiveness connected with strictness; personal example and verbal instruction; knowing unified with doing and some others.Part six discusses the influence and inspiration of family education for the future and following generations. Family education in the Song Dynasty not only had a profound impact on later generations, but also provided many valuable references for today's family education.
