The student's assessment has been a focus in the fields of international education. Nowadays, the new curriculum reform in our country proposes the assessment cannot only pay close attention to the situations of mastering of knowledge and technical ability, but also should place great importance on student's latent energy and quality in many aspects. The traditional student's assessment isn't fit for this new tendency in many aspects while performance assessment which originated from USA can make up with some of the shortfall of the traditional one. The performance assessment hasn't been carried out for a long time at home, so the usage is always in the stage of superficiality and random which weighs heavily against the effectiveness of its predominance and function. In view of the above-mentioned facts, it is necessary to do further research on performance assessment in order to promote the effective application of the assessment.This paper starts from the theoretical researches, traces the history of performance assessment and analyses the connotation and its characteristics. On the basis of investigating the status quo of the application in schools, the paper identifies the existing problems as follows: the lack of comprehensive grasp in the assessment conceptions; the lack of flexibility in assessment criteria; the lack of proper design in performance tasks and the lack of qualitative assessment feedbacks. Then the paper analyzes the causes that bring about the problems of the application from the perspective of teacher, student and supporting environment respectively.After that, the paper discusses how to promote the effective application of theassessment based on the theories of constructivism and multi-intelligence. Firstly, the paper presents the operation steps of performance assessment, then discusses three principles that should be obeyed in application, the principles are as follows: the combination of differences and fairness; the combination of appropriateness and maneuverability; the combination of exterior assessment and interior assessment. There are three assessment methods which are assessed by student himself/herself; assessed by his/her classmates; assessed by his/her teacher. Then the paper dissertates the security system of effective application in three aspects of teacher, student and supporting environment. There are some points call for due attention, such as form correct assessment conceptions; make appropriate criteria; master the key points of tasks design and improve the feedback mechanism and so on. At last, the paper analyzes the performance assessment of oral English in class A aims to validates whether the above ideas are quite serviceable and have bright foreground or not.
