For a long time, reading is the emphasis of Chinese-language teaching in high school, of which reading in class is the most focal point. With further promotion of reform on new courses and constant updating of teaching concepts, reading after class is being more and more valued. However, in practical teaching, it will be often ignored. As a result, it has become a severely stricken area in Chinese-language teaching. In terms of practice, the author of the essay is attempting to seek effective tactics to direct students in order that reading after class will become an essential part in their life.The essay will be classified into five sections:The first section mainly analyzes the background of the reading practice activities in high school. The promotion of the reform on the new courses and the changes in the mode of the college entrance examination both clearly reflect the need for conducting reading after class at present. The investigation on the students indicates the serious situation, and the teacher's direction is vital. Hence the author summarizes the present situation of it both in theory and in practice.The second section presents an overall proposal on the reading practice out of class in high school. Through reading real work under direction, students can enter the true world of text, in which they can communicate with the text while the teacher simply show the way. The process is a case of direction, and the building up of several ones may result in the final proposal on reading direction for the whole high school stage. The author discusses by the following three parts: general purpose, directing principle, and tactics study.The third section is the presentation of the case of how the Old Man and the Sea is conducted, including detailed program, records of practice and reflection on practice. In the direction, the author works out preliminary directing tactics on novel reading. The fourth section is the periodic reflection on the practice, through which the author is trying to make it of some value to the following practice.The fifth section is the epilogue...
