There is little research on conceptions of women in the study of higher education for women. Furthermore, what research there is does not make clear the relationship between conceptions of women and the actual education of women at the college level. An adequate understanding of women's particular characteristics is necessary for an effective female educational program. What kind of education should women take and how to strengthen education's role in women's life and development are the central themes of this dissertation.First, I look at the traditional conceptions of women and its effect on women's college education. Then I trace the historical development of women's college education, and the current difficulties faced in educating women at the college level. Lastly I look at the elements which make up current conceptions of women with an eye toward revaluing the social idea of women and the mission of higher education for women. The result is a first step toward a new framework for educating women at the college level.
