To enhance the "self-awareness" of Educational Science and strengthen the pedagogical reflective construction. Research about the development of Foundations of Education is a major issue of meta-pedagogy, and also the basic issue of Chinese pedagogical history. In our country, Foundations of Education, originated from the late 1920s, the course of development has reached more than 80 years. In the article, its development during the 20th century is divided into four stages, which are start-ups, thriving, stagnation and re-creation stage.Then, from the systematic architectural viewpoint, selecting "Foundations of Education" as the sample, by the cases description, analysis and comparison. explored the developmental characteristics: in the first half of 20th century, it develops rapidly, initially constructs theoretical system, the pragmatism becomes its beginning of theory construction, imitations of Herbart's education system, pays great attention to the historical clue of knowledge, emphasis on the dissemination of the modern education theory; in the second half of 20th century, the study more specialized,. refined, deep, show the independent discipline, to Marxism-Leninism as the guide of education; services the principles and policies of national education.It concludes that evolutional trends of Foundations of Education move forward in the following ways: from pragmatism to dialectical materialism at the aspect of guiding ideology, from imitating Herbart's education mode to depending on its own at the aspect of architecture, from popularizing the knowledge of education to constructing the theoretical system at the aspect of academic norms, from the introduction to the creation at the aspect of theory construction, from the "Three Principles of the People" to the socialism at the aspect of ideology. The Foundations of Education is considered to be an independent intrinsic branch of pedagogy. It will never decline in the future, saying nothing of being independent of ideology at any specific period of time.
